Geologic
Mapping in the western United States
Geologic Mapping in the Western United States
Other Mapping Projects. Geologic mapping
underway in the western U.S. consists of five
main projects. Several smaller geologic mapping projects, described
below, also are making new data available. Most of these projects represent
work underway for specific contractors and studies recently completed.
Fort
Irwin earth-science studies: Geologic mapping,
in conjuction with hyrologic studies, is aimed at wisely using scarce water
resources at this California desert Army base used for mock tank battles.
Potentially hazardous active faults were discovered during investigations,
including actively opening fractures at several locations. [dmiller@isdmnl.wr.usgs.gov]
Geologic mapping in western Death Valley area, California and Nevada: Studies of the structure and origin of rocks, mineral inventories. [pastone@isdmnl.wr.usgs.gov]
Basin and Range - Colorado transect: Geologic mapping along a swath from southern Nevada to southern Colorado, designed to investigate the fundamental behavoir of the earth in several geolgoic provinces. [rbscott@crrg1.cr.usgs.gov]
Geologic mapping in northeastern Washington and northern Idaho: Mapping bedrock and surficial sediment helps to delineate pathways for ground-water flow and to identify major fault zones that were active in the past and now may influence the flow paths for water. [fmiller@galileo.wr.usgs.gov]
Geologic mapping in the eastern Mojave Desert, eastern California: Mapping bedrock and surficial sediment to describe the geologic evolution of this part of the U.S. and to provide information for land-use decisions. [dmiller@isdmnl.wr.usgs.gov; jnielson@isdmnl.wr.usgs.gov; khoward@isdmnl.wr.usgs.gov]
Geologic mapping in the North Cascades, northern Washington: Mapping bedrock and surficial sediment to describe the geologic evolution of this remote area, much of it for the first time. [rah@geology.washington.edu]
Geologic mapping in northern Utah: [dmiller@isdmnl.wr.usgs.gov]

USGS ecosystem studies in the Mojave Desert scheduled for 1998. The project will
develop descriptions of vulnerability and recoverability of the land using
derivative geologic, hydrologic, and biologic data.
